Alaska sourdough Erwin “Nimrod” Robertson of Eagle, Alaska, built a plane that used flapping wings. It was also covered with feathers. It never flew because it burned while it was still on the ground. But it’s flapping mechanism still exists in the museum at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. -By Steve Levi
